Employees at the City of Reno enjoy a second-to-none benefits program. Known for our robust benefits offering, the City offers comprehensive benefits for all regular full-time employees. Regular part-time employees are provided benefits on a prorated basis. Health benefits begin on the first of the month following or coinciding with the start of employment. It's no mystery why the City of Reno was named one of Northern Nevada’s Best Places to Work in 2022.

Director-Level employees are covered along with dependents at 100% by the City of Reno. Part-time employees working a regular schedule of at least 20 hours per week receive prorated benefits. We provide basic life insurance equal to one time the annual base salary (Director-level employees receive two times the annual base salary), AD&D Insurance, and Long-Term Disability. This is completely covered by the City. We offer a PPO plan with a $300 individual deductible and $600 family deductible and a High Deductible Health Plan with a $2500 individual deductible and $5000 family deductible. Need Assistance?
The City of Reno participates in the Nevada Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). The City does not participate in the federal Social Security System but does contribute to the federal Medicare program.
The Nevada Public Employees Retirement System (NV PERS) is your retirement program, which is a defined benefit plan requiring a 5 year “vesting” period. It is not subject to market fluctuations. The City of Reno contributes the full contribution on the employee's behalf to PERS.
Deferred compensation is a defined contribution plan that allows you to put aside earnings in an account that is invested in the market and can help you save additional funds for retirement or future purchases. Employees are eligible to enroll in a deferred compensation plan the first of the month following 30 days of employment and may be eligible for a City match as well.
You may choose to participate in either the 401a plan, 457b plan, or both. Employees can choose to contribute on a pretax basis or after tax basis (Roth). Empower offers the opportunity to manage your own investments, receive assistance in making investment decisions, or have a dedicated investment advisor managing your deferred compensation account.

Vacation and Sick Leave
Most City of Reno employees accrue sick leave at 4 hours per pay period. This may differ depending upon the collective bargaining agreement an employee is represented under. Dependent upon the collective bargaining agreement, vacation accrual is 4 hours or more per pay period. Management employees receive 8 hours per pay period. There are 26 pay periods in a calendar year. Vacation and sick leave accruals increase as service time benchmarks are reached. As mentioned some employees may accrue different leave rates based on their collective bargaining agreement.
Paid Time Off
Part-time employees accrue paid time off at the rate of .06 hours of time per scheduled hour per pay period. PTO is personal leave and may be used for sickness or vacation time.
Holidays
The City of Reno observes 12 holidays through the closing of offices providing non-essential services. Holidays are paid days for regular full-time employees and are pro-rated for regular part-time employees. Most employees also receive a paid "floating holiday," and some receive two floating holidays, depending on the collective bargaining agreement.
