City of Reno Plastic Film Recycling Challenge

The City of Reno is participating in another NexTrex Recycling Challenge! Our community recycled 1000 pounds of plastic film in 2025 and as a result, Trex gifted the City a free bench made of recycled plastic. The location of the new bench will be available soon.

The City is hosting another challenge to collect an additional 1000 pounds of plastic by September 2026. Bins for recycling drop-off are located at City Hall, 1 E First St., on the first and second floors of the building. To learn more about what kinds of plastic you can recycle, please visit the Trex's Acceptable Items webpage.

Solid Waste & Recycling Services

Visit Waste Management for a one-stop resource.

In November 2012, the Reno City Council approved a franchise agreement to facilitate the implementation of a single-stream recycling program.

The new program began in February 2014 and has changed existing garbage and recycling services. Important changes include mandatory cart service, an additional cart for recyclable materials (no more yellow and green crates), additional recyclable material accepted, elimination of extra bags, implementation of extra waste sticker program, four free trips to transfer station and creation of a new EcoCenter.

Waste Management recommends customers keep the carts delivered for at least 120 days before requesting a different option. If the carts you have received are not meeting your needs, you can call Waste Management customer service at 775-329-8822 and request a different option.

For information on recycling programs, refer to the recycling guides above, or please contact the Nevada Recycling Hotline at 1-800-597-5865. Always remember to Reduce, Reuse, and then Recycle!

For a copy of the disposal, residential, and/or commercial agreements with Waste Management, please submit a request with the Reno City Clerk.

Composting

The City of Reno, City of Sparks, and Washoe County conducted a composting survey in May 2025 to better understand residents' desire for and knowledge of composting both food waste and green waste. Below are highlights from the survey report:
  • 79% of respondents would like to learn how to make their own compost.
  • 67% would travel 0-10 miles to drop off waste and 37% would travel 10-20 miles to drop off waste.
  • 83% of respondents would compost food waste if they had waste picked up weekly or twice per month, while 88% of respondents would compost green waste if they had waste picked up weekly or twice per month.
  • Additionally, 13% of respondents shared concerns about the safety of using compost in gardens or around children and pets. These responses suggest that even among engaged residents, there are gaps in understanding that could be addressed through regional education efforts.
