Reno City Council accepted the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Older Adults Home Modification Program Grant for $1,230,000. The grant is awarded to the City of Reno Housing and Neighborhood Development Department to provide home modifications to low-to-moderate-income older adults.
The program will benefit applicants with incomes at or below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI), ensuring assistance is targeted to those most in need. The grant will assist approximately 110 older adults, ages 62 and older, in receiving modifications that aim to reduce fall risks, improve home safety, and empower seniors.
“This grant will enable older adults to remain in their homes to 'age in place’ with dignity and independence,” said Jackie Bryant, Reno City Manager. “We are excited to continue working to make homes safer and healthier for older adults in our community.”
The City of Reno will serve as the fiscal agent and oversee the program’s financial and operational accountability, while
Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada (RTNNV) will act as the subrecipient, managing the application process, intake, and direct execution of home modifications. Applications are projected to open early summer 2025.
“The City of Reno and Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada have a strong track record of collaboration in addressing the housing needs of low- to moderate-income households,” said Meg Shea, RTNNV CEO. “This will be a great opportunity to assist older adults in our community with housing modifications.”
To support this, RTNNV will provide a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, supervised by a licensed Occupational Therapist, to help older adults identify their goals and develop strategies to safely navigate their homes.
