After nearly five years of construction, the City of Reno will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new, 108,000 square-foot Public Safety Center located at 911 Kuenzli Street. The building, which formerly housed the Reno Gazette Journal, was significantly remodeled, transforming the structure to a new, state-of-the-art headquarters for the Reno Police Department. Members of the media are invited to attend on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 1:00pm.
The ribbon cutting will include remarks from U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve, Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance, and others. Light refreshments will be provided. Attendees will also have a chance to view the public-facing areas within the Public Safety Center. Volunteers will assist with traffic control and parking.
The transformation process, spanning nearly five years, was managed by the City of Reno’s Public Works Department and designed by OneStudio D+A. Plenium Builders, a local contractor, was awarded the construction bid in October 2021.
Instead of starting from scratch, the project retained much of the building's original structure, reducing environmental impact and preserving its historical significance. New amenities include enhanced technology infrastructure, private interview rooms, and expanded space to accommodate the growth of the police department. The new Public Safety Center nearly doubles the square footage of the current Reno Police Department building on Second Street.
Some members of the Reno Police Department now work in the new building, while the entire department is expected to move in September and October 2024. Please note that residents should still use the 455 E 2nd Street location through September for in-person services. A separate release will be sent once these public services have moved to 911 Kuenzli Street.
