City Seeks Feedback on Proposed Business Licensing Code Updates

Post Date:07/10/2024 9:56 a.m.

The City of Reno continues to seek public feedback as it updates the business license and special event code. In March 2023, the Reno City Council directed the Business License Department to rewrite Reno Municipal Code (RMC) Title 4 “Business License Code” and RMC Title 5 “Privileged Licenses, Permits and Franchises.”  A draft of potential code revisions has been completed, and the City is now inviting the public to several upcoming community meetings to provide feedback.

Upcoming Stakeholder Meetings:

All meetings will have Spanish assistance and take place inside Reno Council Chambers at City Hall, 1. E. First Street, Reno. Interested parties can attend in person or virtually by selecting the meeting link above on each date. Recordings will be uploaded online after the meeting. Those who wish to submit comments in lieu of attending the above meetings may do so by sending an email to BLCode@reno.gov

While the Code has been mostly unchanged for over 25 years, some sections of RMC have been adopted, repealed, and amended. This has created inconsistencies, contradictions, and in some instances, outdated regulations. Proposed changes to the Business Licensing code can be viewed here.

In late 2023, City staff heard from citizens and other stakeholders to gather feedback on current business license regulations, which was then given to the consultant hired to lead the code revision. Since then, staff and the consultant have worked together to create a revised business license code.

“Now that we have a draft, we want to meet with the public so we can hear directly from them about their ideas on the potential changes,” said Lance Ferrato, Director of Business Licensing. “These revisions will create an efficient and clear set of regulations to guide and govern businesses in the City.”

After feedback is collected, the revisions will go to City Council for more discussion. The City hopes to officially adopt new changes in late fall, with the updates becoming effective January 1, 2025.
