City of Reno Expands Hearing Accessibility

Post Date:05/31/2024 9:47 a.m.

The City of Reno has launched the use of new devices that allow people who are deaf or hard of hearing to communicate easily and effectively with City staff and to listen to City meetings and court proceedings. UbiDuo 3 and Listen EVERYWHERE became available in Spring 2024.

UbiDuo 3  device enables people who are deaf or hard of hearing to communicate with others without a sign language interpreter by using two-way, simultaneous, real-time keyboards. The public can locate these devices on the second floor in the Business Licensing/Development Services and City Clerk’s offices front counters. As well as on the first floor at security.

Meanwhile, Listen EVERYWHERE offers amplified assistive listening that is directly delivered to users’ smartphones through a free app. This service can be used during Reno City Council meetings and other public meetings at City Hall, along with courtrooms in the Reno Municipal Court. Users can connect to the "Assistive Listening" Wi-Fi SSID, connect their hearing capable Bluetooth device and download the Listen Everywhere Apple or Android app. For those without smartphones, the City also offers receivers in Council Chambers and Municipal Court.

"These two pieces of technology represent another step in our commitment to enhance local government access," said Cynthia Esparza, Chief Equity and Community Relations Officer.  "We are always exploring avenues to do better, and we proud to remove a couple barriers with UbiDuo 3 devices and Listen EVERYWHERE.”

Both devices are available for use at Reno City Hall, 1. East First Street in Downtown Reno. UbiDuo 3 signage is visible to the public where the devices are located. Email Community@Reno.Gov for any questions.
