Reno Works, a 16-session program that provides a group of people experiencing homelessness with workshops and classes focused on life and job skills, has expanded to Reno Works+ thanks to a $75,000 grant from SilverSummit Healthplan. Currently, 7 students are participating in the life-changing program.
‘Reno Works’ is now ‘Reno Works +’, a program that broadens support services and educational offerings to participants after graduation. These post-graduation services and the implementation of the workshop series called "Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-by World,” offered by Opportunity Alliance of Nevada, are designed to create a bridge out of poverty.
"We're delighted to facilitate this essential grant to the Reno Works program. At SilverSummit, we believe wholeheartedly in the power of education and opportunity. The 'Reno Works+' program is more than just a class; it's an all-encompassing resource that provides the life and job skills needed for a brighter future. With the added post-graduation support, it's not just about educating; it's about creating lasting change towards a life of self-sufficiency and accomplishment," said Vice President of Community Solutions Nicole King.
Kellie George, Executive Director of Opportunity Alliance Nevada shared, “Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’- by World” puts concepts, tools, and relationships in the hands of people in poverty to make a difference in their own lives and in the life of their community. These proven solutions can help move individuals from poverty to self-sufficiency; reduce social costs related to crime, poor health, and welfare; strengthen education attainment and job skills; improve on-the-job-productivity; revitalize neighborhoods; and build sustainable communities where everyone can live well.”
“I am thrilled to see ‘Reno Works’ evolve into something bigger,” said Councilmember Kathleen Taylor. “The City of Reno continues to find creative ways to support our residents in improving their lives.”
Reno Works+ provides participating residents with classes focused on life and job skills, as well as providing temporary employment through community improvement projects including working in area parks, improving public facilities and cleaning along the river corridor.
The sessions also incorporate safety training, interview skills, long-term employment preparedness, wrap-around case management and mentoring.
The City has partnered with Volunteers of America Northern California and Northern Nevada since 2015 to host Reno Works. Since then, 110 graduates have completed the Reno Works Program.
