For Customers:
The Community Development Department is adjusting its processes and procedures in response to COVID-19. The changes allow business operations to continue for customers without requiring face-to-face interactions. Read this information for how these changes may impact you if you normally do business with the Community Development Department.

For Businesses:
Per the Nevada Health Response COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Initiative, all non-essential businesses have been ordered to temporarily close to the public until April 16, 2020. Read this guide for additional information on operational restrictions and mandatory closures for certain types of businesses. The latest information will be available at Reno.Gov/COVID19.

In an effort to provide relief for businesses affected by the COVID-19 business restrictions, the City of Reno is extending the time for businesses to pay their license fees. The deadline for any business license fees due between March 27, 2020 and April 30, 2020 may be extended 30 days. Any other business that has been unable to pay fees due to the COVID-19 state of emergency may request an extension on a case by case basis. The Community Development Department is responsible for the physical development of the City. The core service areas of the department include: housing and neighborhood development, planning, engineering, building and safety inspections, and business licensing.

Electronic building permit submittal program expands to commercial permits

Customers who are applying for a building permit and submitting plans can now do so electronically. The program, which originally launched in July 2019 for certain types of applications, is now available for all commercial and residential permits. 

The electronic submittal program provides a streamlined approach to submitting building permit applications and plans by increasing the efficiency of the process and increasing communication with customers. The electronic submittal process allows users to:

  • Submit applications via email;
  • Upload required plans and other documents 24 hours a day from anywhere; and
  • Check the status of the permit review process online.

Twenty-five percent of building permit applications submitted in November 2019 were submitted electronically. 

“We are excited to expand this service for our customers. We’ve come a long way in a short period of time, and we look forward to continuing to listen to our customers and work with them to improve the program,” Building and Safety Manager Chris Pingree said.

Applications, forms, instructions, and other materials about the electronic submittal process are available online. The City of Reno also offers free weekly training sessions on the electronic building permit and plan submittal process. Through May 2020, the sessions are scheduled on Thursdays from 2:30-4 p.m. They are held at Reno City Hall on the 6th Floor in the large conference room. RSVP to Plans Examiner Daniela Monteiro.
