Governor Sisolak signs emergency directive to order non-essential businesses to close

For Customers:
The Community Development Department is adjusting its processes and procedures in response to COVID-19. The changes allow business operations to continue for customers without requiring face-to-face interactions. Read this information for how these changes may impact you if you normally do business with the Community Development Department.

For Businesses:
Per the Nevada Health Response COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Initiative, all non-essential businesses have been ordered to temporarily close to the public until April 16, 2020. Read this guide for additional information on operational restrictions and mandatory closures for certain types of businesses. The latest information will be available at Reno.Gov/COVID19.


The Community Development Department is responsible for the physical development of the City. The core service areas of the department include: housing and neighborhood development, planning, engineering, building and safety inspections, and business licensing.

Additional public input sought on Reno zoning code update

Draft code language on development standards released for review

As part of the City of Reno’s effort to update its development regulations, the second part of the City of Reno draft zoning code is now available for public review and input. The chapters of draft code released this month focus on development standards and include topics such as:

  • Parking
  • Grading and hillside development
  • Site and building standards
  • Sidewalks
  • Historic preservation

Many more topics are covered in the draft chapters. The community is encouraged to review the draft language and use the commentary and footnotes throughout the document for more information about the proposed changes.

“We know there is a lot of information in the draft code language. We encourage you to visit one of our open houses this month to learn more and share your thoughts,” Community Development Director Arlo Stockham said. “Listening to the community about these first drafts continues to be of the utmost importance to us. We want to hear from our residents.”

The City of Reno is hosting two public open houses this month to provide citizens with an opportunity to discuss the development standards code language and give input:

More information on the zoning code update

The development standards chapters represent the second of three parts of the code to be released for public input through the Zoning Code RENOvation project. Part 1, which focuses on zoning districts and uses, was released in August 2019. The community is still encouraged to review and provide comments on that portion. The third part on procedures is anticipated to be released in December 2019.

After collecting input on all three sections through mid-January 2020, staff will be taking the feedback and creating a revised consolidated draft. The revised document will be released in April 2020 for a second round of public review.
