July 31, 2019 Reno City Council Highlights
In our ongoing commitment to keep citizens and media informed, we’ve summarized the outcomes of a few key agenda items from today’s Regular Meeting of the Reno City Council:
D.7 - Sustainability and Climate Action Plan
The council approved the ambitious 2019 plan, focusing on a number of standards and practices to combat climate change. The goal is to lead by example as a city, and guide the region and private business toward better design and infrastructure. Staff explained that Reno’s average temperature has risen seven degrees in the last 50 years, which is among the highest increases in the country and the government cannot wait to act.
D.1 RENOvation Zoning Code Updates
Council was presented with the latest direction for changes to planning and development. That includes:
-Expanding the affordable housing incentive program for parking and density
-Reducing contract term from 30 years to 20
-Expand eligibility from 50% Average Median Income to 80%
-Apply to mixed use projects
-Replace and update current standards to reduce subjectivity and align with infill development goals
H.2 - Business Recognition
Council honored DoughBoys Donuts for its exceptional role in the community. DoughBoys has bolstered a number of schools, nonprofit organizations, Little Leagues and events through sponsorships and donations.
H.3 - Citizen Recognition Program
Council honored Grant Denton, the Operations Manager of the Downtown Reno Partnership. Mayor Schieve noted the passion and emotion that Grant brings to his work on the streets of Downtown Reno. She also noted his ingenuity with the Karma Box program and compassion for the homeless community.
