Governor Sisolak signs emergency directive to order non-essential businesses to close

For Customers:
The Community Development Department is adjusting its processes and procedures in response to COVID-19. The changes allow business operations to continue for customers without requiring face-to-face interactions. Read this information for how these changes may impact you if you normally do business with the Community Development Department.

For Businesses:
Per the Nevada Health Response COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Initiative, all non-essential businesses have been ordered to temporarily close to the public until April 16, 2020. Read this guide for additional information on operational restrictions and mandatory closures for certain types of businesses. The latest information will be available at Reno.Gov/COVID19.

In an effort to provide relief for businesses affected by the COVID-19 business restrictions, the City of Reno is extending the time for businesses to pay their license fees. The deadline for any business license fees due between March 27, 2020 and April 30, 2020 may be extended 30 days. Any other business that has been unable to pay fees due to the COVID-19 state of emergency may request an extension on a case by case basis. The Community Development Department is responsible for the physical development of the City. The core service areas of the department include: housing and neighborhood development, planning, engineering, building and safety inspections, and business licensing.

Residential Areas the Focus of Next Zoning Code Issue Sheet

Issues related to zones and uses in residential areas are next on the list to be discussed as part of Zoning Code RENOvation, the project to update the City’s zoning code to align with the new Master Plan. The community is invited to review the latest issue sheet and provide comments, either through the online form or by emailing CodeUpdate@Reno.Gov. Comments are requested by June 3, 2019.

This latest issue sheet on neighborhood zoning covers recommended approaches to the following topics:

  • Process for implementing Master Plan policies for the diversification of neighborhood land uses at the parcel level;
  • Residential zoning districts, densities, and building height;
  • Residential zones and uses;
  • Zoning overlay districts; and
  • Zoning map amendments. 

The issue sheet also recommends that the City not allow accessory dwelling units (ADU) with the code update in harmony with the recent disapproval of an ADU ordinance. Any potential regulations for short-term rentals are recommended to not be considered with this code update as well.

“We want to thank everyone who provided comments on the first set of issue sheets related to mixed use and non-residential areas. This process allows us to gather input early on and use that feedback to draft the first round of code language,” Community Development Director Arlo Stockham said.

In addition to providing comments online, members of the community are invited to attend the May 15, 2019 Reno Planning Commission meeting and June 5, 2019 Reno City Council meeting where these topics are planned to be discussed.
