City of Reno invites public to annual plant sale

Post Date:05/09/2019 10:15 AM

The City of Reno invites the public to the annual plant sale on Friday, May 10, 2019 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its greenhouse, located at 190 Telegraph Street (east of the public storage facility).

Attendees will have the opportunity to buy locally grown, pesticide-free plants, such as tomatoes, geraniums, peppers, lobelia and assorted annual flowers, vegetables and select 15-gallon trees.

“This is a great opportunity to add to your garden this spring,” City of Reno Horticulturist Pamela Mecham-Bedard said. “The proceeds from the plant sale go toward purchasing the items needed to grow more plants for the next year, roses for the City’s Rose Garden and tools for our volunteers to work in the parks.”

Mecham-Bedard works with more than 30 volunteers to grow the plants. Many of the plants are used for the City’s parks; however, the volunteers produce extra plants each year for the plant sale.

“The plants are grown in the same greenhouse that we use to grow the petunias for the baskets that hang along the Riverwalk,” Mecham-Bedard added. “There is not a significant added cost to produce the extra plants because we are already using water and electricity in the greenhouse for the petunias. The seeds are donated, and the volunteers help to care for the plants.”
