Reno City Councilmember Oscar Delgado is partnering with Diverse Voices Amplify Public Relations (DVAPR) for a first-of-its-kind Diverse Voices of Northern Nevada Summit at Reno City Hall on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Delgado, the keynote speaker, will present to public relations and strategic communications professionals about the importance of diversity.

Delgado is partnering with five PRSSA students from the Reynolds School of Journalism who are competing in the 2019 Bateman Competition, representing Nevada. Delgado’s partnership with the DVAPR campaign will also involve awarding scholarships for diverse students interested in public relations.

These scholarships will give students of color improved access to the University of Nevada, Reno’s branch of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). With this membership comes mentorship from established professionals, a community of peers with which they can share their experiences, and the opportunity to gain vital experience during their college years.

Professionals attending the summit will learn how to increase diversity and inclusion. The event is a call to action for those with the power to take action and change these career fields for the better.

Delgado’s remarks will be accompanied by Carolina Martinez and Devin O. Williams with the university’s Cultural Diversity Committee. Martinez and Williams will help educate industry professionals on how to recruit diverse talent. The summit’s speakers will address the difficulties with inclusivity posed by professionals. The summit will also aim to bridge the communication gap between potential employers and young, diverse students soon to graduate.

This summit is a part of the implementation of Nevada’s Bateman representatives. The Bateman team is a diverse group of university students driven to create long-lasting change in public relations and strategic communications.
