City of Reno and partners collaborate to provide additional temporary overflow homeless shelter

Post Date:11/16/2018 9:06 AM
The City of Reno, along with several local churches and Acting in Community Together in Organizing Northern Nevada (ACTIONN), has collaborated to provide a temporary solution to the growing issues of homelessness as winter weather has moved into the region.

The additional temporary overflow homeless shelter will be set up in the parking lot of the Community Assistance Center (CAC) through the winter months in an effort to provide extra shelter options for the homeless in our region. This shelter will have heat, electricity and Sani-Huts and will be able to provide beds for at least 50 people.

The shelter will open on Friday, November 16, 2018 during the hours of 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. It will be staffed by volunteers from local faith-based entities.

Any faith-based, corporate or community group willing to help staff this overflow homeless shelter for a night may contact the Administrative Lead at 775-848-5859. Four adults are needed to staff the shelter each night.

The current CAC men’s and women’s shelters provide 208 beds total. The family shelter provides 102 beds, and the existing temporary overflow shelter provides an additional 150 beds.
