Memorial Day Safety Tips

Every year, the Reno Fire Department responds to structure fires that were started from barbecues being used too close to combustibles.

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that grill fires on residential properties result in an estimated average of 10 deaths, 100 injuries and $37 million in property loss each year. More than half of grill fires happen between May and August, and almost half occur between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The Reno Fire Department recommends that people:

  • Keep their grills at least 10 feet away from their house.
  • Make sure your grill is stable, and consider using a grill pad or mat to protect your deck or patio.
  • Check the grill for gas leaks, and make sure it’s cleaned regularly. If the flame goes out, turn the gas off, then wait approximately five minutes before you relight.
  • Keep patio decorations and umbrellas away from the grill.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher handy. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher, keep a bucket of sand next to the grill.
  • Never leave the grill unattended, and don’t put too much food on the grill at one time.
  • Never use a grill indoors.

There are also special City-adopted fire code requirements for multi-family rental properties:

  • Charcoal burners and open-flame cooking devices shall not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction, meaning  anything constructed of wood or vinyl.
  • Exceptions to this code include one- and two-family dwellings and balconies with automatic sprinkler systems.
