Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center pool reopens to the public

Post Date:10/13/2017 4:24 PM
The Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center pool, complete with a new roof overhead, will reopen to the public on Monday, October 16, 2017. Reno City Council Members and staff will hold a short ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. prior to the planned lap swim from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

“We appreciate the community’s considerable patience as we’ve worked to reopen the Evelyn Mount pool,” Vice Mayor Neoma Jardon said. “This facility is important to all, but particularly to our seniors, who use the pool for water fitness, and our parents, who can register their children for swim lessons. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of teaching our children how to swim.”

Citizens can sign up for classes and view the Evelyn Mount pool schedule at Reno.gov/ParksandRec.

“This pool is a great asset to the community, and we are elated to have it back in operation,” said Ward 1 Reno City Councilmember Jenny Brekhus, also the Council liaison to the Recreation and Parks Commission. “This is an important day for parks and recreation, as our Council has made it a top priority even with the budget challenges that have faced the City of Reno in recent years.”

The warmer water and shorter pool depth (3 to 5 feet) at Evelyn Mount provide an ideal environment for swim lessons and therapeutic exercise. A fully accessible, ADA family changing room was also added during the time needed to complete the roof repairs.

The pool originally closed in January 2016, when the old roof failed. The City invested nearly $1.5 million in capital improvement funds to replace the roof, add the changing room and make other necessary upgrades, including lighting, to the pool area.

Citizens are also encouraged to use the City’s other indoor year-round pool, Northwest Pool, which is currently open. Open swim is every Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
