McKinley Gallery West Presents ‘Sun Shadows – Nevada Botanical Cyanotypes,’ a show produced by Laika Press and created by local community members and artists. The numerous, small prints that form the show are made up of beautifully saturated blues, overlapped with inverted shadows in pale blues and whites. These image figments create ghostly abstractions from recognizable shapes of local flora from the Truckee Meadows region. The remnants of the plant forms in the deep blue of the paper form earthly clouds. The abundance of images forms a tapestry not unlike fields of grasses and flowers or the flow of rivers and streams.
Cyanotypes are a form of photographic printing process that produce a print in shades of blue and cyan. The process is relatively inexpensive and more accessible than other printmaking and photographic process.
Laika Press is a local nonprofit co-op printmaking space. Their goal is to foster a more connected printmaking community in the Reno area. They provide access to printmaking for students, artists, and community members. They also hold classes and workshops. For more information about Laika Press, visit their website.
