Bound Figures and Made Up Bodies
Tom Drakulich - City of Reno City Artist

City of Reno City Hall
Metro Gallery
July 8 – August 30, 2019
Reception: July 11, 5:00 – 7:00pm, Artist Talk at 5:30

The Reno City Hall Metro Gallery presents Bound Figures and Made Up Bodies, paintings and ceramics by Tom Drakulich.  The exhibit is composed primarily of large-scale acrylic and oil paintings with complimentary pieces in ceramic.  The paintings are layered with different types of material, oil and acrylic combining with enamel and latex.  Muted blues and earthy reds contrast with spots of bright orange and brilliant yellows.  The base clay of the ceramics similarly contrasts with the glossy hues and variable metallics of the glazes.  In each piece, common symbols repeat until each sign “is transformed from intended purpose” “into a homogenous surface structure.”  Abstracted figures overlay and blend into the backgrounds, letting the viewer consider the connection between the overarching meaning of the symbol and its connection to the individuality of the human form.

Tom Drakulich is Reno’s first City Artist.  The surrounding desert and its relationship to the human form influence his work. He was born and raised in Reno.  He received his B.A. and his M.F.A. from the University of Nevada, Reno.  He currently teaches ceramics at UNR.
