Over 55 years ago, the first plane went up in the Nevada desert to kick off what would become the National Championship Air Races and Air Show, and a legacy was born. A legacy of history, heritage, and preservation. Of daring, imagination, and wonder. Of memories made, traditions formed, and legends created one amazing race at a time.
It was 1964 when it all began, and Bill Stead organized an air race near Reno, Nevada, a place where the most skilled pilots in the world could come to race the most legendary and historic aircraft to ever take flight. That inaugural year was the start of something special - something that has grown in scope and grandeur every year since. Motivated beyond merely winning trophies and cash awards, the pilots that flock to our region share a passion for defying the constraints of gravity as they blaze the trail through the Sierra skies.
Our event is among the last of its kind, carrying on the tradition of the Cleveland Air Races of the 1920's, '30's, and '40's. The only air racing event in the nation that features head-to-head racing with multiple racing classes and the National Championship Air Races and Air Show has attracted millions of spectators from around the globe.
We are proud to be a 501c3 not-for-profit organization and home to one of the largest STEM education discovery zones in the country. Year after year, thousands of volunteers, fans, sponsors, and employees step up to show their support for our beloved air races.
Engines roaring. Crowds cheering. Hearts pounding. This is the world's fastest motorsport - a one-in-a-kind thrill you have to see, hear, and feel to believe. This is classic, cool, and contemporary all rolled into one. This is life at 500 miles per hour. This is the National Championship Air Races and Air Show.
