Nevadan Basques Reception

The Reno City Hall Metro Gallery presents Nevadan Basques, portraits by Zoe Bray.  Brays work portrays Nevadans of Basque descent.  Her portraits differ from the traditional portrayal of Basque people.  Instead of focusing on external markers of identity, Bray addresses the personal individuality of her models and how they “choose to be Basque and American.”  After the show ends in the Metro Gallery, it will move to Basque Country in the fall.


Bray’s family comes from the French Basque village of Gamarte.  She formerly taught at the University of Nevada Reno’s Center for Basque Studies.  In 2015, she worked as a research fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  She trained in Florence, Italy.  Bray’s art focuses on combining naturalist-realist painting with ethnographic inquiry.  Her works have been exhibited in the US and Europe.  More information can be found on her website:
