On average, the Truckee River experiences one major flood per decade. The City of Reno is contributing to the development of a Flood Management Plan to protect our communities from flood damages. We are working with the community, The US Army Corps of Engineers, the Truckee River Flood Project, and its partners to offer preferred alternatives to a Flood Management Project for the Truckee Meadows.
The flood of 1997 reignited the community’s involvement in developing the project and in 1999, a 1/8th cent sales tax was enacted by Washoe County for public safety and to help fund a community-approved flood prevention plan.
The City of Reno is a partner with the Truckee River Flood Project together with the City of Sparks and Washoe County. The flood project is in the feasibility phase according to Army Corps processes, and the project has not yet been authorized or funded by Congress. The City works with these partners to make sure that our communities will be protected from flooding through the construction of recommended features. Certain elements of construction could begin in 2009. For more information about the Truckee River Flood Project visit http://www.truckeeflood.us/
