Department Overview

Community Development Department and Redevelopment Agency Mission 
To assist in the physical and economic development of a great city.

Organization      
    The Community Development Department is responsible for the physical development of the City.  The activities of the Department range from maintaining the long range plans for the City to reviewing plans for new buildings and houses.  The Department is organized as follows:

Administration - Community Development Director/Redevelopment Administrator John Hester, contact 775-334-2255.  This area includes the overall administration of the Department, support for boards and commissions staffed by department personnel, payroll and expenditure accounting.

Mr. Hester is also the Administrator for the Reno Redevelopment Agency which is a completely independent entity with the City Council as the Agency's board of directors and its own dedicated revenue sources. 

Planning - Planning Manager Claudia Hanson, contact 775-334-2381.  This division is responsible for current and long range planning.  Current planning reviews administrative and discretionary applications for existing or new development.  Long range planning includes the City Master Plan (citywide plans, regional center plans, transit corridor plans and neighborhood plans) and coordinating with other planning agencies such as the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency and the Regional Transportation Commission Planning Department.  This division is also responsible for reviewing all business licenses, building permits and entitlement requests for compliance with the Master Plan, Municipal Code and adopted policies of the City Council.  Case administration for Planning Commission is handled by this division.

Engineering - Engineering Manager Kyle West, contact 775-334-2364.  This division is responsible for review, approval, inspection, and acceptance of public facilities that are built as part of private developments (e.g., streets, sewers, storm drains, etc.).  Planning case review and building permit review are additional functions of the division. 

Building - Building and Safety Manager Don Rosenthal, contact 775-334-2387.  This division is responsible for providing public safety to this community's citizens by ensuring that structures are designed and built in compliance with state-of-the-art construction codes.  It is also charged with processing applications and providing inspection services in a timely manner in order to provide quality customer service.

Code Enforcement - Customer and Code Services Manager Alex Woodley, contact 775-334-2229.  For code violations or complaints, please contact Reno Direct.  The Code Enforcement division ensures properties in the City comply with appropriate code requirements and coordinates with other City programs to systematically improve neighborhoods.  Mr. Woodley is also responsible for Business Licenses in the City of Reno.

Economic Development/Redevelopment Agency - Economic Development Manager Peter Wallish, contact 775-334-3814.  The City and the Reno Redevelopment Agency, in coordination with additional entities, provide a broad array of economic development resources. The Agency is a distinct legal entity separate from the City of Reno which is administered through the Community Development Department.  The Reno Redevelopment Agency has a long history of successful projects and an ambitious list of priorities for the future.
