Recreation Record Becomes a Quarterly Publication

In an effort to maintain communication with the public while responding to reduced financial resources and staffing reorganization, the production schedule for the Recreation Record has changed, and is now scheduled for release in March, June, September and December. It will continue to be available on the website and at city recreation centers.

Two years ago, in July 2008, the Reno City Council approved Reno’s first Recreation Facilities Plan. This Plan outlines short-term and long-range goals for upgrades to existing facilities and the construction of parks and recreational facilities. As improvements happen and new facilities open over the next several years, this publication will chronicle developments in recreation facilities along the way.

First Adopt-A-Pool Event Refreshes Northwest Pool

The first Adopt-A-Pool event held on August 21st at Northwest Pool was a great success. Over thirty volunteers from local groups such as Sierra Nevada Community Aquatics, Reno Aquatic Club, Lakeridge, Sierra Nevada Masters, Reno Area Triathletes, the Reno Recreation & Parks Commission, and Reno City Council member Sharon Zadra helped the pool look better than ever!

Volunteers spruce up the grounds around Northwest PoolIn addition to the general cleanup of debris and trash around the facility, the volunteers applied two fresh coats of paint on the interior natatorium walls and lobby walls, and moved 20 yards of mulch all around the building addressing uneven surfaces and improving general landscape aesthetics during the afternoon of work. We are grateful to the volunteers for their generous help in sprucing up the facility.

Adopt-A-Pool was scheduled during regular seasonal maintenance done by Public Works and PRCS Department staff. During the seasonal closure, much work was accomplished including: the replacement of damaged tile around the pool and in the locker rooms; sheet rock repair and painting of locker rooms, the janitor room, and a supply room; the repair of leaking plumbing and replacement of valves in mechanical room; the removal of an old lifeguard stand; the replacement of old bolts on the pool ladders; painted safety lines around pool; and pressure washing and general organization of office records.

City Receives Bidder for 7-month Recreation Activities at Sky Tavern

City of Reno Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) recently issued a Request for Proposals for spring, summer and fall activities at the Sky Tavern mountain and lodge for the seven months the facility is not being utilized by the Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program (STJSP). STJSP is a non-profit organization offering affordable ski training for youth throughout the Truckee Meadows and has been in existence since 1960. The City is looking for programming to complement this successful program that will increase the use of the area from May 1 through the end of November. The City has received a bidder and is currently going through the process of reviewing for a presentation to the City Council in early fall.

NV Energy Rebate Projects Add Up to Big Investment in Recreation Facilities

Improvements at the Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center and pool, Idlewild Pool, Northwest Pool, Traner Pool, Rosewood Lakes Golf Course, and Mira Loma Park in the past year total almost $675,000. Upgraded lighting systems, pool covers, water systems, boilers, xeriscaping, heaters, pool filter pumps and a wind turbine have made the facilities more energy efficient which reduces cost to the City. The improved systems also make the facilities more comfortable, consistent, reliable and safe.

Panther Valley Skate Park Getting Lights

Solar lights like these will soon light up Panther Valley Skate ParkThe only skate park operated by the City of Reno that doesn’t have lighting is getting lit up. The Panther Valley skate park light project is underway and will be completed by the end of October. This project originated with citizens at the North Valleys Neighborhood Advisory Board and supported by the Recreation and Parks Commission will use $46,900 from the FY2009/10 CIP budget using residential construction tax funds for Park District 1 to purchase and install five solar light fixtures. The light fixtures specified use an integrated solar panel and battery case, and are similar in design to the light fixtures used at Yori Park, minimizing the cost to operate and maintain.
