Judge Kenneth Howard

Judge Kenneth Howard graduated from the University of Nevada Reno with a degree in Business Administration in 1974 and received his Juris Doctorate from McGeorge School of Law in 1981.

Prior to his judgeship, Judge Howard served for six years as a Deputy District Attorney within the Washoe County District Attorney's Office.  He had the privilege of serving under former District Attorneys Cal Dunlap and Mills B. Lane.  Judge Howard conducted a private practice of law for twelve years, concentrating in the area of criminal defense.  Judge Howard was appointed to the Reno Municipal Court in 1998.  Since that time, he has been re-elected three times without opposition.

Judge Howard is a member of the American Judges Association, the Nevada Judges of Limited Jurisdiction and the American Judicature Society.  He has also taken an active involvement in the local community and has served on the boards of numerous service organizations, including The Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society, The National Conference, The Boys and Girls Club and Volunteer Lawyers of Washoe County.  Judge Howard was a proud member of Big Brothers Big Sisters.  He presides over the Fresh Start Therapeutic Drug Court and conducts a monthly Kid's Court/Ask An Inmate program for local 5th and 6th grade students. 

Judge Howard considers himself a native Nevadan having resided here since 1953.  He attended local schools including Glenn Duncan Elementary, Traner Middle School, Reno and Proctor Hug High Schools.  He was honored to have served as the first student body president of Hug High and was a member of its first graduating class in 1970.  He was privileged to be inducted into its inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame.  Judge Howard was a member of the 1970/1971 University of Nevada Reno football team.  In continuing his legal education, Judge Howard has completed numerous courses at the National Judicial College and elsewhere.

Judge Howard's wife of 37 years, Marilynn, has been a teacher with the Washoe County School District for 28 years.  He and his wife have two adult daughters.  In his spare time, he enjoys golf, fishing and spending time with family and friends.  He is an active member of his church family.
