We Need Your Cans at Reno Clean and Green
Posted Date: 9/30/2008
Tomorrow Reno Clean and Green starts sweeping through the City of Reno with an exciting new component.

The event will put Reno on the map nationally for their recycling efforts, community involvement, and hard work to reduce illegal dumping. The new component will have Reno competing against like-sized cities across the nation in a “Cans for Cash Recycling Challenge.” The challenge begins October 1 and ends on October 30.

Residents will have three simple ways to help Reno win the challenge:
1. Reno residents can put their aluminum cans in their curbside recycling bins for regular pick up throughout the month,
2. Reno residents can drop off their aluminum cans into their local recycling center, and
3. Reno residents can bring all their cans to any of the Clean and Green sites and put them in the “Cans for Cash” bins.
Every can received will be counted and used towards the total number collected for our city.

The “Cans for Cash Recycling Challenge” is sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Keep America Beautiful. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and the City of Reno have partnered for this worthwhile challenge. If awarded the winner, the City of Reno will win $5,000 and Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful will win $2,500. As an added bonus to the challenge, the cans brought into the Clean and Green sites will be cashed in for money. The money received for the cans will be used to put up a wind turbine in the City of Reno. The clean-renewable energy produced from the wind turbine will save money on a daily basis and will create less reliance on fossil fuels.

Reno Clean and Green neighborhood sites are set up every Saturday in October. City of Reno residents will be able to dispose of their household trash and debris at the various neighborhood locations for FREE with a voucher. It is a great time to get rid of lawn trimmings, tree limbs, clutter, and garbage that have been storing up. These same vouchers can also be used for a one time FREE visit to Waste Management’s Lockwood Landfill. Special vouchers to Clean Harbors Environmental are also available for the disposal of old paint, oil, and other hazardous waste.

In addition to residential trash, residents can visit each neighborhood site in October with bikes for Kiwanis Club, electronics for Computer Corps., tires for Tires Plus, and metals for Solid Waste Reduction Services. Refurbishing items and recycling helps our entire community.

City of Reno residents will receive their Reno Clean and Green voucher in their TMWA bill or Washoe County Water bill. Residents must present their voucher to dump for FREE at neighborhood sites or the Lockwood Landfill. The special hazardous waste vouchers are available on a first come first serve basis to City of Reno residents.
