MISSION STATEMENT

We proudly serve the public by keeping them informed about
issues pertaining to law enforcement, educating them about
crime prevention, and facilitating a partnership between
our community and the Reno Police Department.

The Community Affairs Division is under the supervision of Lt. William Rulla. The Division includes Crime Prevention Officer Kellie Fox and civilian employee Veronica Hee-Garcia, Management Assistant.

RPD’s Community Affairs Division is responsible for several programs that keep our citizens safe and educate them about police services. From the Cadet and Explorer programs that introduce young people to police work, to our Police Recruiting program that handles employment of sworn officers, Community Affairs disseminates knowledge about the police officer position and its responsibilities and opportunities.

Citizens can learn about the Reno Police Department by attending our Citizens Police Academy, usually offered each Fall and Spring for 12 weeks. Also, Reno businesses and organizations can request presentations in several areas of law enforcement and crime prevention to educate both citizens and employees. Some presentations are available for children, to familiarize them with what police officers do, and to educate them and help them to avoid dangerous and negative situations.

Owners and managers of housing complexes in Reno are educated concerning ways to keep undesirable tenants out of their units through our Crime-Free Multi-Housing program. This program also provides information to help maintain crime-free residences through crime prevention ideas and suggestions that can be utilized around homes and complexes. Additionally, our Division can help citizens establish a Neighborhood Watch if this program meets the needs of their area.

The Community Affairs Division also oversees our 100-strong Senior Auxiliary Volunteer Effort (SAVE), a program utilizing senior volunteers who handle supplementary duties and responsibilities, thus freeing up sworn officers to answer calls for service and concentrate on their first priority, providing protection for the citizens of the City of Reno.

The Community Affairs Division also coordinates some of the Department’s special events, including the Cops and Kids Picnic, held each summer in cooperation with the Truckee Meadows Boys and Girls Club, and the annual Christmas Bike Give-Away Children's Program.
