The following page addresses the various electrical and plumbing certificates available for the City of Reno.  The following Code Amendments are under review at this time for Test Changes as noted below:  the Amendments to the 2006 IEC - Admin. Provisions and 2005 National Electrical Code (PDF) and the Amendments to the 2006 Uniform Plumbing Code (PDF).  Qualifications are substantially unchanged.  Since the certification process includes third parties, any and/or all of this information is subject to change without notice.  For questions, please contact the City of Reno Community Development Department at 775-334-2063.

Initial Application Fees for Various Certificates:

Apprentice Electrical Certificate                 $  5.00
Maintenance Electrical Certificate - Electrician $10.00
Maintenance Electrical Certificate - Owner $21.00
Apprentice Plumber's Certificate $  5.00

Renewal Fees:

Apprentice Electrical Certificate $  5.00
Maintenance Electrical Certificate - Electrician $10.00

Required Documentation for All Certificates:

All applicants are required to provide an acceptable form of identification and the necessary documentation for the applied certificate as listed below.

ELECTRICAL:
 
Additional Required Documentation for Various Electrical Certificates:                   

for an Apprentice Electrical Certificate:

  1. Provide proof of participation in a state approved electrical apprentice program and shall be an employee of a certified electrical contractor under direct supervision of such employer or a certified journeyman electrician under like employment.

for a Commercial Journeyman Electrical Certificate provide one of the following:

  1. Provide proof of 8,000 hours or (4) years of electrical trade experience in the employ of a licensed electrical contractor.  Letters verifying employment including dates of employment must be written on company letterhead.  Please summarize on the application rev 07-01-10 (PDF) and submit with registration fee.
  2. A contractor license or journeyman card from another state.
  3. A graduation certificate from a state approved apprenticeship program.
  4. A union journeyman card.

for a Residential Journeyman Electrical Certificate provide one of the following:

  1. Provide proof of 6,000 hours or (3) years residential electrical trade experience in the employ of a licensed electrical contractor.  Letters verifying employment including dates of employment must be written on company letterhead.  Please summarize on the application rev 07-01-10 (PDF) and submit with registration fee.
  2. A contractor license or journeyman card from another state.
  3. A graduation certificate from a state approved apprenticeship program.
  4. A union journeyman card.

Test Information:

JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICAL - Residential and Commercial

  1. Effective January 1, 2007 the test site for the Journeyman Electrical Certificate has changed.  PLEASE OBTAIN OUR APPLICATION AND READ THE ICC Bulletins (link) for FULL information.
  2. The Electrical Exam is based on the National Electric Code, 2005 Edition.
  3. The test is open book and applicants must provide their own code books.

        for a Maintenance Electrical Certificate - Owner and Electrician:

All Maintenance Electricians shall be under the supervision of an Employer possessing a Maintenance Certificate as an employer.  Both such certificates shall be issued by the Community Development Department.

Maintenance Electricians shall not be permitted to install new wiring or equipment, except where the installation is repairs, replacement or maintenance of existing equipment; or replacement of equipment equal to or like in kind. 

PLUMBING:

  1. Effective May 1, 2009, the test site for the Journeyman Plumber and Master Plumber has changed.  Please see the Nevada Board of Plumbing Examiners (link) NBOPE site for complete information and application.  You may also visit the National Inspection, Testing, Certification (link) NITC site for information.  Please read the December 2009 notice from the City of Reno for additional information.   
  2. The Plumbing Exams are based on the 2006 Uniform Plumbing Code.
  3. The test is open book and applicants must provide their own code books.

for an Apprentice Plumber Certificate:

  1. Provide proof of participation in a State of Nevada or Federally approved apprenticeship program.

for a Journeyman Plumber Certificate:

  1. Provide proof of 8,000 hours or (4) four years plumbing industry experience.

for a Master Plumber Contractor Certificate:

  1. Provide proof of holding a certification for NBOPE or City of Reno Journeyman Plumber for a period of 2000 hours.
  2. Please read the December 2009 notice from the City of Reno for additional information.

Reexaminations/Renewals:

Every certificate shall remain in effect until December 31st of the current year, unless canceled or revoked.  Renewals shall be applied within ninety (90) days  from the expiration date or reexamination and payment of all fees will be necessary.  For questions, please call the Community Development Department at 775-334-2063.
