Throughout the world, water pollution has become as massive a problem as air pollution-possibly greater. For example, huge areas in the waters off the Gulf of Mexico have become "dead zones" devoid of marine life that has been attributed to runoff that contains pesticides and herbicides. But the solutions can be so easy! Read on... For local LID demonstration projects, click HERE.
Use Environmentally Safe Products: Integrated Pest Management (IPM)There are many pests which can be treated with safe, chemically free organic alternatives to pesticides. By using non-toxic methods, you protect your family's and pets' health and reduce the amount of dangerous chemicals that flow off of landscape and into storm drains.

Report Illegal DumpingIllegal dumping may result in rain and floodwater being diverted into areas not designed for drainage. Debris, trash, paint products, motor oil and other chemicals can be picked up by rainwater flow and deposited into the storm drain system. Illegal dumping is against the law!
Don't Let the Hose Run When washing your car, use biodegradable soap with as little water as possible. Use a nozzle or shut off the hose while washing your car with a bucket, and then rinse. If you have access, choose to wash your vehicle on a gravel or grass area. For more information about water conservation, and water runoff prevention, contact the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension at 784-4848 or 832-4150.
Dispose of Trash Properly Much of what we throw away as trash is considered recyclable! It is estimated that of the 4 tons of trash that washes up on beaches--over 80% of it could have been recycled!
Pick up After Your Pets Animal waste that runs off of lawns and sidewalks sends harmful bacteria into the storm drain system and eventually to the Truckee River, creating problems for swimmers and fish. 80% of our drinking water supply comes from the Truckee River, too! Please dispose of pet waste in trashcans.
Keep Your Car or Truck MaintainedKeep a trash bag in the car and use it! Do not throw anything out the window. Keep up car maintenance to reduce leakage of oil, anti-freeze and other fluids. If you experience fluid leaks, absorb it right away with kitty litter, and dispose of properly to avoid rain contact and stormwater pollution.
Follow a few "Best Management Practices"Each day urban runoff contaminates surface waters and harms aquatic life and increases the risk of flooding by clogging gutters and catch basins.
